Abstract

Waste from packaging is currently attracting a lot of attention in the Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) industry. For instance, waste from plastic packaging is a major source of pollution on land and in the oceans and there is an increasing societal pressure on manufacturers and retailers to reduce the amount of packaging. This gives rise to many new initiatives to Reduce, Reuse and/or Recycle packaging, in accordance with the triple-R model of circular economy. This research particularly focuses on the second R of the circular economy model, i.e. Reuse of packaging. The purpose of the research is to develop an in-depth understanding of the economic and ecological rationale of various reusable packaging models.
