Abstract

Choice models have a much-extended use in passenger transport because of its application for forecast, understanding behaviour and welfare economics project evaluations. This has sparked the development of various types of models to accommodate different behaviour. However, the application of these models in freight transport have not been used as extensive mainly due to the lack appropriate data and the complex behaviour of agents. This has led to oversimplification of models and the transfer of model assumptions that may not apply to the freight context. In this seminar, I will explore the basics of choice modelling, the possible applications in freight and possible interaction with current logistics and optimization models. In particular, I will look the choice of several alternatives simultaneously with the use of the Multiple Discrete Extreme Value Model (MDCEV). The MDCEV models the choice of port and mode for grain consolidators in Argentina. The relevance of this application is that it allows the choice of several alternatives simultaneously making it appropriate for planning choices.

Biography

Rodrigo Tapia is a research fellow in the Institute for Transport Studies (ITS) of the University of Leeds. He obtained his PhD and Msc in transportation studies from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, in Brazil. During the masters and PhD, he studied freight choice modelling merging his industrial engineering studies with the choice modelling framework. He is also interested in using non-conventional data sources for freight choice modelling. He has also worked in the Ministry of Transport of Argentina in the freight-planning undersecretary and exploiting smart card data for subsidy evaluation.
