Abstract:

Efficient transport and logistics systems are crucial for the functioning of economies with global sourcing and distribution. While in the past state interventions in the transport sector have mainly focused on the provision of physical infrastructures, the focus has switched to the management of the flows of goods moved on these networks. Today, transport policy aims at (i) influencing the behavior of economic actors towards a more sustainable behavior including the usage of intermodality and at (ii) the development of efficient transport markets.

To assess transport policy instruments, (micro) economic models of the logistics actors might be employed. These models describe the behavior of logistics actors under certain boundary conditions such as regulations, market environment, spatial context etc. Companies’ behavior relates to choices of certain distribution systems, choices of logistics concepts and usage-patterns of trucks. Shippers either influence the surrounding conditions or react on decisions in the transport business on their part. This lecture gives an overview on recent modeling advances to map logistics choices in transport models. Starting from the classical transport-hypernetwork models, the presentation focuses on micro and multi-agent simulation models of transport markets.
