Changing global dynamics and emerging challenges in sustainable logistics strategies – with this motto, KLU together with Universidad de los Andes and the Hapag-Lloyd Center for Shipping and Global Logistics hosted an international summer school for Ph.D students and Master graduates in Hamburg. From March 21st to March 25th participants discussed new research perspectives together with experts from the field, including economics, science and politics. Three participants shared their impressions with us.

The participants were supported by scholarships of the Volkswagen Stiftung. Prof. Gordon Wilmsmeier was Academic Head of the event.

Karla Parra from Colombia
"I decided to join the ISS because it seems like a great opportunity. My work is related to logistics and supply chain in commodities. I felt it was a great opportunity to meet other people that are related to my work. The ISS matched my expectations. All the presentations have been good, I think I liked most the presentation by Nils Haupt of Hapag Lloyd and the Industry Panel with Timna Eckschmidt, Antonio Correa Olbrich (Consul General of Chile in Hamburg) and Orlando Baquero (Lateinamerika Verein e.V.)."

Evie Kaldaki from Greece
“I’m a Ph.D student and the International Summer School was an extremely interesting opportunity for me to expand my knowledge on sustainability and on logistics and get them from a different perspective. It went beyond my expectations – it was very interesting and very dynamic. I really like the fact that it’s more thought provoking rather than just lecturing. We exchange a lot of knowledge and I really like the different background of the lecturers and people here and the organization as well. The new topics have expanded my perspective."

Gustavo Martinez from Colombia
"I decided to join ISS in Hamburg because I in a project with the university about growth, freight transportation and decarbonization. I think it’s important to know more about sustainability in logistics and I also want to start my Master in July and I think it will help me a lot to focus my future research. The summer school went beyond my expectations. I learned a lot not only from the lecturers but also from my colleagues here. There are a lot of different profiles of researchers here."
