Sparking New Friendships and a Passion for Sustainability: Successful Summer School at KLU

Once again, a great success: This year’s KLU Summer School Sustainability provides students three weeks full of exciting insights and new experiences and friendships.

Alexa Burmester, Assistant Professor of Applied Quantitative Methods, was once more head of the Summer School. Alongside her, new faces at KLU, such as Franziska Lauenstein, Assistant Professor of Strategy, also contributed their expertise and perspectives on sustainability. In addition, the students visited companies and made trips to Berlin and Bremerhaven. The opening event itself, a cooking class in Eimsbüttel, was a great success full of culinary delights and promoting a sense of togetherness.

Feedback from this year’s participants:

For Shakirah Natukunda and Sarah Aloyo, second-year students at Makerere University Business School in Uganda, it was their first time in Germany. "Our head of faculty suggested the KLU Summer School because we're very interested in sustainability. We're part of the 'Inspired Youth from Passion' foundation, where we reach out to the rural areas of Uganda and share knowledge - like how to make reusable pipes. We're expecting to gain a lot of knowledge here that we can share back home and also make connections," said Shakirah. "We already like the way the Summer School opens our eyes in terms of business and sustainability."

"It's so much fun to get to know the different cultures, but also to learn more about sustainability, because we are confronted with it all the time and we have to learn to live with it," stressed Leonie Krause, a third-semester student. "As a KLU student, I want to choose the sustainability profile, and it just so happens that my professor is organizing the summer school."

Selina Shibata, a second-year student at the University of Warwick in the UK, also expressed her enthusiasm: "I've always had an interest in the environment and after my first year at university, I really wanted to gain more insights into how the environment connects with economics, so this program is perfect. You can tell that this university is small, so everyone is closely connected, which makes everything easier. Also, I like the way the professors teach, and having just twelve people in a class is very comfortable, you quickly get into conversations."
