Olympics in Hamburg: Discussion at KLU Examines Impact on the Economy and Mobility
What impact would the Olympics have on Hamburg’s economy and mobility? A panel discussion on April 22 at Kühne Logistics University (KLU) will address this question, featuring experts from the fields of sports and politics.

Hamburg is preparing a potential bid for the 2036, 2040, or 2044 Olympic Games. On May 31, 2026, citizens will vote in a referendum on whether the city should officially bid to host the Games.
What would this mean for the city—for infrastructure and mobility, for the economy and logistics, for the generation growing up in Hamburg? These are the questions we will address. Following a brief presentation of the bid concept, the panel discussion will feature:
- Simone Blunck, Deputy Director of the Preliminary Project for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Hamburg
- Dr. Anne Gnauk, Director of the Hamburg/Schleswig-Holstein Olympic Training Center
- Dr. Alexandra Schubert, Head of the Economic Affairs Division, Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labor, and Innovation
- Moderator: Prof. Dr. Björn Michaelis, Associate Professor of Management Practice (KLU) and founder of a tech startup in the sports sector
Following the event, there will be an opportunity for audience questions and discussion over drinks and snacks.
KLU is a partner university for elite sports and is organizing the discussion in collaboration with the Hamburg/Schleswig-Holstein Olympic Training Center and the Olympic Initiative. Hamburg is competing with Berlin, Munich, and the Rhine-Ruhr region to host the Summer Games in 2036, 2040, or 2044. At the heart of the concept are sustainable Games achieved through short travel distances and the use of existing sports facilities.
