KLU Takes 3rd Place in the 21st Alster President’s Cup of Hamburg Universities

Eight Hamburg universities sailed on the Alster on July 5th for the prestigious President's Cup. The university regatta at the sailing pier of Hochschulsport Hamburg took place for the second time in a row after a multi-year break due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In a challenging and highly varied race, KLU managed to seize third place after a rocky start. HAW claimed first place ahead of TU Hamburg.

Not only the race but also the weather held many surprises for sailors and spectators. The July sun created a beautiful backdrop, but suddenly changing gusts from 14 to 22 knots pushed both amateurs and professionals to their limits. The main goal was not to capsize, which three boats unfortunately failed to achieve in the third round. Nevertheless, the mood of everyone involved remained high.

KLU, whose first team was slowed down by an unnoticed loosened jib, managed to stay afloat and reached a proud third place in the last round. Following good old tradition, the winning team was sent into the water during the award ceremony – although, considering the cool evening and the all-too-short halftime break of the European Championship match, only one team member in  a wetsuit.

As every year, the boats were each manned by at least one member of the university administration. For KLU,  Executive Director of Administration & Managing Director Immo Schmidt-Jorzig, Dean of Programs Prof. Christian Barrot, Head of HR Nina Bielau, Ph.D. candidates Keno Theile and Gero Niemann, and student Faye Kochmann competed.
