In this interview, Jan Ehlers, Director of Executive Education and Business Solutions at KLU, explains why alumni are the living proof of a university’s impact and success and therefore are so important for KLU’s further development.

Can you tell us about your background and what inspired you to join KLU?
Absolutely! I’m Jan, born and raised in northern Germany (Glückstadt). Together with my wife I have three awesome boys (22, 16 & 9 years old) and live in Berlin. In the last 20 years I had the pleasure to work in international higher education, where I’ve always been passionate about creating innovative educational formats to help people grow and reach their potential. I began my career by building the alumni network at Humboldt University in Berlin, which gave me firsthand experience in understanding the importance of a vibrant alumni community. At ESCP Business School, I witnessed how powerful an alumni network can be when everyone feels responsible for contributing to the school’s success. I was inspired to join KLU and to contribute to its growth strategy and support the next development stage of this unique institution.
Why do you believe alumni are so crucial to a university, especially a young one like KLU?
Alumni are the living proof of a university’s impact and success. They represent the outcomes of our educational efforts and serve as ambassadors in the professional world. For young universities like KLU, a strong alumni network is even more vital. It helps build our reputation, provides valuable networking opportunities, and supports our growth through mentorship and engagement. A lively alumni network can also be a key differentiator for prospective students when choosing a university. However, I also know that a vibrant alumni network can be quite beneficial for the alumni themselves by supporting each other on the individual professional journey.
What exciting developments at KLU would you like to share with our alumni?
There are several exciting changes happening at KLU! We’re launching new academic programs, establishing a satellite campus in Vietnam, and enhancing our partnerships with companies. These initiatives aim to elevate our alumni network, increase the value of your degree, and create new professional opportunities. Additionally, we are committed to offering more lifelong learning possibilities for our alumni, ensuring that you continue to grow and succeed long after graduation.
How do you envision the role of alumni in KLU’s future?
I see our alumni as integral to KLU’s mission. Your achievements and professional success reflect our shared goals. Whether through networking, mentorship, or simply staying connected, your contributions make a significant impact. I envision KLU not just as an outstanding provider of research and education, but even more as a platform where stakeholders come together to create value for one another. That's why your ongoing engagement is crucial to our growth and success.
What message would you like to share with the KLU alumni community?
I invite all of you to stay connected, meet the next generation of managers, and join our lifelong learning opportunities. Your engagement is vital to our mission, and I look forward to sharing our progress with you. Together, we can continue building a strong, supportive KLU community. I’m excited about the journey ahead and hope we will have the chance to meet up in person soon.
