Hapag-Lloyd and KLU Extend Cooperation
Kühne Logistics University (KLU) and Hapag-Lloyd will continue collaborating for another five years. At the signing ceremony in July, the CEO of Hapag-Lloyd AG, Rolf Habben Jansen, approved the continued funding of the Hapag-Lloyd Center for Shipping and Global Logistics (CSGL) at KLU.
“We’re looking back on a very good collaboration,” Habben Jansen said. “At present, our industry is literally in motion – more than ever. So research findings are even more important for us. We’re hoping for fresh impetus to the future.”
“You have questions. We have answers,” KLU President Thomas Strothotte said. “Only when science and industry are in dialogue can we address current challenges – particularly climate protection and adapting to climate change in the maritime economy.”
“The renewal and expansion of our collaboration with Hapag-Lloyd is a meaningful step for KLU and CSGL. We’re delighted,” CSGL Director Gordon Wilmsmeier affirmed. In addition to his professorship at KLU he continues to hold the Kühne Foundation Professorial Chair in Logistics at the Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá. “Competitiveness and sustainability are key challenges in the maritime sector. This is where our research begins, and here we want to support actors in the economy and politics in safely navigating ‘troubled waters’ and ‘rough seas.’”
In the early days the center focused on sustainability. Several research projects at CSGL, some funded by the EU, examine or are examining alternative options for ship propulsion and the implementation of sustainable maritime supply chains. Undergraduate and doctoral students have also developed their theses in cooperation with Hapag-Lloyd. In the future, the team and topics at CSGL are intended to grow and the cooperation with Hapag-Lloyd in research, teaching, and continuing education to intensify. KLU and Hapag-Lloyd have cooperated for about four years at the joint research center.
