Zach Rabinowitz joined Kühne Logistics University in September 2023 as a Master's student in Global Logistics and Supply Chain Management. He started his Research Associate position in August of 2025 and in October 2025 he continued as PhD candidate under the Supervision of Prof. Dr. Johannes Meuer. His research focuses on integrating pyrolysis-based biochar systems into smallholder coffee supply chains to enable circular economy transitions, carbon sequestration, and sustainable value creation. As part of his Master's thesis Zach developed a system dynamics model using Powersim to evaluate the economic and environmental impacts of introducing decentralized and centralized pyrolysis reactors. His work examines how pyrolysis by-products — biochar, bio-oil, and biogas — can improve farmer profitability, drive carbon removal, and influence policy mechanisms such as carbon credits and low-carbon commodity pricing.
Zach holds bachelor's degrees in economics and philosophy from the College of Charleston and completed the MMEF Graduate Year in Macroeconomics at the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne as well as a Masters of Science in Global Logistics and Supply Chain Management from KLU. Before joining KLU as a research assistant, he worked with Neumann Kaffee Gruppe, where he focused on sustainable coffee supply chains, and with Kühne + Nagel, where he contributed to logistics optimization and data-driven decision-making. He has also served as a Research Assistant under Professor Mark Witte on topics in applied economics.
His research interests include sustainable supply chains, circular economy integration, system dynamics modeling, biochar applications, and low-carbon transition strategies.
