Lecture
Online Platforms like Uber, Grab and Delivery Hero rely on rapid and effective decision-making within milliseconds while navigating highly uncertain environments, such as unpredictable traffic conditions and varying customer behavior. The quest to optimize these transportation operations has driven the development of advanced algorithmic solutions that extend well beyond the scope of transportation.
In my inaugural lecture, I will explore how reinforcement learning, a powerful method from the field of machine learning, is applied to these problems. I will begin by illustrating the fundamental principles of decision-making through a simplified problem. Building on this foundation, I will present findings from more complex transportation scenarios, demonstrating the potential and challenges of using reinforcement learning in real-world applications.
Bio
Prof. Dr. Arne Heinold is Assistant Professor for Transportation with a focus on maritime logistics at Kühne Logistics University (KLU). He brings valuable experience from his previous role as an interim professor for operations management at Otto-von-Guericke Universität Magdeburg. He holds a Ph.D. from Kiel University, complemented by a B.Sc. in Economics (also from Kiel) and a M.Sc. in Global Logistics from KLU. Following his graduation from KLU, Arne gained 3.5 years of valuable industry experience, providing inspiration throughout his academic journey. Arne's research focuses on the environmental impact of transportation using methods from the field of Operations Research. His findings are published in several international journals, among them Transportation Science, Journal of Industrial Ecology, and Transportation Research Part D and E. His research has been recognized with several awards, including the prestigious Wissenschaftspreis Logistik 2022 and Jacqueline Bloemhof Award on Sustainable Supply Chains 2023.
