The presentation will cover three topics; the first will illustrate the present container market and the development of the world container fleet and possible impacts of further deliveries to the container market.
The second topic will focus on the right ship speed in consideration of the total fleet cost. To display the dependency between ship speed, required transport volume and fuel oil cost graphics will be used to discuss this issue. An example of a modified container ship design will high light the new design aspects.
The last topic show the advantages of a new Baby-Post-Panamax Container Ship compared to the typical Panmax vessels.


Jan Olaf Probst studied Naval Architect at Hamburg University after an apprenticeship at the shipyard Blohm&Voss.
At present he is holding the position of Executive Vice President – Ship Newbuilding Division at Germanischer Lloyd (GL). The Ship Newbuilding Division is responsible for the verification of all vessels at GL in the field of hull structures and ship safety; this includes beside the Head Office departments in Germany, the local plan approval offices situated in China, South Korea and Singapore. The GL Rule Development including programming is a further major part of the Ship Newbuilding Division.
Technical support and assistance for shipyards and ship owners belong to his day-to-day work for all kind of vessels.
Jan-Olaf Probst was closely involved in the evolution from Panamax to the largest Post-Panamax container ships built in Korea, China and Japan. The feasibility study of the 6.200 TEU Post-Panamax project was guided by him, as were many other Panamax and Post-Panamax container ship projects ranging from 7.500, 8.500, 9.500, 11.000 TEU, supported and classified by GL. He was the project leader for the 13.000 TEU container vessel, a joint development with Hyundai Heavy Industries. This design has been the starting point for all mega container vessels, the so called Twin-Island Concept.
As chairman of the worldwide Container Forum of Germanischer Lloyd, he is in direct contact with shipping companies, shipyards and designers as well as organizations for container vessels.
