Impact of humanitarian disasters on local market economies

As the humanitarian disasters of the 21st century grow ever more severe, they leave in their wake a striking proliferation of population displacement, property damage, health crises, administrative and economic collapse. To address these problems, a growing body of research in humanitarian operations has unraveled a wide range of topics from ex-ante mitigation to ex-post coping; natural disasters to man-made disasters; and sudden-onset disasters to slow-onset disasters. Despite this progress, however, the impact of crises on local markets remains highly underexplored. Considering these practical problems and empirical gap, we analyze the effects of natural disasters (project 1) and conflict (project 2) on staple food prices by conducting secondary data analyses. Project three focuses on how conflict affects local markets using qualitative research design.

Tedros Hagos is a PhD Candidate in the field of Humanitarian Logistics at Kühne Logistics University under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Maria Besiou and Prof. Dr. Jan Fransoo since January 2021. His research focuses on humanitarian operations, with a particular focus on humanitarian disasters in developing countries. Tedros holds a B.Sc. degree in Chemical and Bio Engineering from Mekelle Institute of Technology and a master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) from Adigrat University. Before joining KLU, he worked in various roles in the humanitarian sector.
