Strategic Partnership for Low Emission Logistics

The global non-profit organization Smart Freight Centre, which promotes environmental sustainability in the global freight sector, has recently made KLU a “strategic partner” of its Global Logistics Emissions Council (GLEC). The GLEC is the main organization harmonizing the measurement of emissions from logistics worldwide, operating with a network of more than 90 companies, industry associations, and green freight programs and backed by governments and other stakeholders.

Professor Alan McKinnon who has worked closely with Smart Freight Centre since it was founded in 2013 states that: “We are honoured to be the first and so far only university to become a GLEC partner.  This underlines KLU’s leading role as an institution researching, advising and teaching in the field of sustainable logistics. We will be joining an impressive group of international organizations vary active in the ‘greening’ of freight transport and logistics.’”

As a strategic partner, KLU will provide advice on the measurement, reporting and reduction of emissions from logistical activities. It will also participate in GLEC events and network with other affiliated organizations. Smart Freight Centre will input into sustainable logistics courses within the university and, when the opportunity arises, work with KLU on joint projects.

The mission of GLEC as an industry-led partnership is to drive emission reduction and enhance efficiency across global logistics supply chains. They do this through global, harmonized guidelines for reporting and reducing logistics emissions that work for business. The GLEC's work involves the development of guidelines, testing them with companies, and promoting their industry-wide adoption.  Among its corporate members are large corporations such as DB Schenker, Deutsche Post DHL Group, Heineken, hp, Kühne + Nagel and Lenovo.
